Objections against the planned street in the Altea land-use plan(PGOU), that connects Avenida Principal de la Sierra with the sports ground of Altea la Vella and the fountain Garroferet/Santa Ana and the Urbanisation „Candela“. (see Plan in Spanish Version). The reasons given for this street are: better access to the sports ground and to Urbanisation „Candela“ , thus reducing motor traffic in Altea la Vellas Calle central „Cura Llinares“. Objections: 1) The sports ground is easily accesible by car via Avenida Principal de la Sierra and Calle Violeta, which turns left only 200 m after the street proposed in the PGOU. On foot, the sports ground can be reached via the street passing the cemetery. 2) The Urbanisation „Candela“ has appropriate car access via Calles Azalea and Erica. Mopeds, bicycles and pedestrians can use the street leading from the village past the fountain Garroferet/Santa Ana to the Urbanisation “Candela”. Bottom line: The proposed street has no advantage at all. Neither does it provide better access to the sports ground, nor to the Urbanisation “Candela”, since the route leading from Altea la Vella via Calle Cura Llinares to the Urbanisation “Candela” is shorter than the planned connection. In addition to that, the street would go through a finca and destroy some natural environment, where herbs like Pebrella, Santolina, Rosemary and Thyme grow wild. Even worse: more than 80 big trees would have to be felled, including a huge Pine tree, about 30m tall, with a circumference of 3,10m, which actually should be included in the list of „Arboles Monumentales de Altea“ that cannot be felled(see photo in Spanish version). Apart from these botanical aspects, I would like to emphasize the geological damage. The construction of this street would change considerably the rock formations in the area. It would also destroy the picnic facilities only recently installed by the Ayuntamiento and frequently used by families from the village. And this place is used for local events, particularly during Fiestas de Santa Ana. On top of all that, building the street would incur enormous costs, due to the steep slopes, both, from the Avenida Principal down to the sports ground as well as from the level of the finca down to the Fountain Garroferet/Santa Ana. The only remaining consideration is, how one can reduce car traffic in Calle Cura Llinares. My suggestion is: 1) Blocking car traffic by means of a post/pole in Calle Cura Llinares at the entrance to the church plaza. Thus residents before this pole could drive up to that point. Those living behind the church could access their homes via Calle Violeta. An alternative would be a retractable pole, similar to the pedestrian area at Cap Negret/San Tomas, for controlled access for residents. 2) Reallocation of those parcellas opposite the Calvario, which were originally intended for the construction of housing blocks Garroferet 2 and 3, into parking space. The design of the parking area should include turning options for trash collection lorries. 3) Blocking car traffic by means of poles several meters behind the picnic area at the Garroferet/Santa Ana fountain. There is space enough for trash collector lorries to turn around. The measures proposed in points 1) through 3) would reduce through traffic, but would allow residents, pedestrians, bikes and mopeds to pass and would entail only minimal costs.
