About us After fighting individually for several years for the welfare of street cats, neutering and spaying them with our own means and some help of the local and regional governments, we decided to join forces in a non-profit organisation dedicated to the street cats and helping the caretakers of the colonies. Thus the Asociación Gatos Felices Altea (Happy cats Association Altea) was born in 2019. What we do With the Happy Cats Association we wish to achieve colonies ‘under control’, which means that the cats are neutered and cared for by volunteers. The volunteers feed them on a daily bases, give them anti-parasitic and check on their health. If necessary they take the cats to the vet. We neuter and spay them on our account and we help the local government with their neutering program. We do this according to the TNR-system (CES in Spanish), meaning Trap, Neuter, Release. For kittens and abandoned cats we try to find foster and/or adoption homes. We also organise educational events and special classes in primary and secondary schools to make them aware that they have to take care of their pets, not only when they are cute and small, but also when fully grown and never to abandon their pet! Benefit and necessity The existence of feline colonies do not pose a health threat, neither does it entail the existence of filth or a source of infection in the streets, because a healthy cat does not spread diseases. On the contrary, where there are colonies there are no rats of mice who do spread diseases. Occasionally, cats emit meows or grunts that may annoy some neighbours. But these meows are typical of cats in heat, and are avoided by neutering and spaying them. This is what the TNR-project entails: capturing, neutering and releasing the cats to their colony. Once neutered, vaccinated and checked by a vet the volunteer takes further care of the colony. The roll of the caretakers is very important as thanks to their work, they know every cat in their colony and make it possible to capture sick cats and keep the colony healthy.
